Rev. Albert Palmer, who served Central Union Church 90 years ago, selected those words for our then-new sanctuary, as summing up the Christian message.
This very day, July 5, 2015, my wonderful wife Margie offered the pastoral prayer, with these words above her.
Our church’s website notes: “The words that inspire us today, LOVE NEVER FAILETH, for 90 years have comforted, inspired and invited people to be embraced by God!”
God’s love is with us, helping us, embracing us, supporting us throughout hard times. We all have hard times, as when in 1981 our daughter Patty lay seriously ill (with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma) at Kaiser Hospital in Honolulu. Of course we prayed for her! Friends from church in came to pray. Yes, Patty died, but did we give up on God? No way.
Our years on earth amount to the twinkling of an eye in the history of our planet and universe. But in our lifetimes, God calls us to have faith, make every day count — and trust that LOVE NEVER FAILETH.
